A 'Roarsome' Expedition

Script

After their trip to Jurassic Park, which ended in total disaster, the tourists now prepare for just another day on Isla Primis ¹ as they board the Jurassic Kingdom jeep with their guide, under the watchful eye of the park scientist.

They enjoy feeding a Brachiosaurus and having a toilet break. But behold a T-Rex escapes and trashes the ... toilet.

As they continue on their journey on the park monorail, they reach the coast and gasp at the Mosasaurus feeding. Sadly, now an Indominus Rex unleashes. Grady and his beloved Raptor manage to fend it off and he rolls away in his hamster ball. Is this the end? Surely not!

The T-Rex joins in with the Raptor to chase the I-Rex away. It then gets mauled by another Mosasaurus, the Pterodactyl flies away and the volcano erupts ... Such fun!

An Evolutionary Adventure

The performance, as well as the mat, evolved over time:

Jurassic Park mat

When we were selected to participate in RoboCup Junior Internationals, we decided to more than quadruple the size of the mat given we were moving from about 2 x 2m to 4 x 5m stages. We continued with the Jurassic Park theme but changed the layout (to 2 x 4m) and added some robots and props to the crew that won us Nationals.
We finalised the layout and interactions and moved on to the new Jurassic World mat.

Jurassic World mat

This new mat was also meant to be 2 x 4m and lay on the left of the Jurassic Park mat with a one meter gap representing the InGen restricted area. A tunnel / mountain was to connect both mats. All the robots and props were new except for Rexie who had a second life in Jurassic World as Indie.
We also finalised the layout and interactions, but due to time constraints decided to revisit the 2 mats and come up with another idea which, while still much bigger than Nationals, would be feasible in the timeframe remaining.

Jurassic Kingdom mat

This final mat is 3 x 4m and showcases Isla Primis¹, the new island where the adventure continues. It is printed in 3 horizontal panels of 0.9 x 4m, 1.2 x 4m and another 0.9 x 4m. This is to allow most of the road to be featured on its own panel and thus avoid seams and bumps which would interfere with the robot movement. While the design is ours, it was fine tuned to prepare for printing by our supporters at Centre State Signs.
Most of the robots and props were taken over from the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World mats.
